Artificial Water Crisis in Karachi

Karachi: An artificial water crisis has been created in Gulshan-e-Iqbal with the connivance of Sindh government and Water Board officials.Citizens are facing severe problems during Ramadan and they are forced to buy expensive water tankers.

The tanker mafia is robbing the citizens with both hands.Water Board is stealing water from Gulshan-e-Iqbal residential area and supplying it to Napa Chowrangi Hydrant which is running 24 hours.

Residents say the lockdown has limited industrial and commercial activity, so water shortages are a big question mark. An official of the Karachi Water Supply and Drainage Authority said on condition of anonymity that the entire water board system is dilapidated and corrupt, but bribery is rampant in the water trunk department.

It is to remember that the city has two water supply systems with separate superintendent engineers and staff, the water trunkman oversees the canals from the Indus and Hub dams and the city’s bulk lines. The Department of Water Trunk Main is the bulk water supply system in the city. The other system that provides water to the Water Trunk Main is called Local Water Distribution System.

Under this system, water is supplied to the houses of the residents through pipelines, valve operation and gravity.
When the department does not supply water to the local water distribution system in the water trunk itself, water will be provided to the homes of some citizens.

In fact, the demand for water increases every year, especially in Ramadan, and in these three to four months, the tanker mafia business is booming, so this artificial water crisis spreads throughout the city. And behind this heinous business is not only the officials of the Water Board but also the full support of the top officials of the Sindh government and the citizens who also pay the bill of the Water Board for buying expensive water tankers due to the artificial water crisis.

Muhammad Adnan Khan, Chairman, UC-21, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, told media that the water trunk man department is not supplying water to Gulshan-e-Iqbal section but most of it is being supplied to Napa hydrant due to which Gulshan-e-Iqbal block One, Block Two, Block Five, 13D-1,2,3 Block 13G, Jamali Colony, Baloch Goth, Zia-ul-Haq Colony, Wasim Bagh and Rahmatia Colony are facing severe water crisis.
