Germany bans female teachers from wearing headscarves

BERLIN: A German court has ruled that a ban on schoolteachers wearing headscarves is illegal.

According to the World News Agency, Germany’s Federal Labor Court has ruled that it is unconstitutional to ban female schoolteachers from wearing headscarves to cover their heads, saying that any citizen should be deprived of his or her basic rights and religion. It cannot be stopped even if it does not cause chaos in the country.

The Berlin court ruled in the case of a Muslim woman who pleaded guilty to teaching in a public school in the city and was barred from working simply because she wore a headscarf.

The German federal court added in its decision that the petitioner was discriminated against on the basis of religion, which is against the law. Berlin-elected lawmakers have called for changes to controversial laws on female teachers wearing headscarves following a court ruling.
