The Afghan government has released 100 more Taliban prisoners

The Afghan government has released 100 more Taliban prisoners. The Afghan president announced the release of 2,000 Taliban prisoners yesterday.

According to media reports, the Afghan Taliban announced a ceasefire within three days of Eid, which was welcomed by Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and announced the release of 2,000 Taliban prisoners, of whom 100 were released.

The Afghan government has released 100 Taliban prisoners from Bagram prison, Javed Faisal, a spokesman for Afghanistan’s National Security Council, told AFP.

US Taliban peace deal

The US-Taliban agreement in Qatar on February 29, 2020 stipulated that the withdrawal of US and NATO forces from Afghanistan would take place within the next 14 months.

The agreement included the release of 5,000 Taliban prisoners and 1,000 Afghan security personnel by March 10, 2020, but was delayed due to disputes between the parties and the Afghan government’s objections.

Talks between the Afghan government and the Afghan Taliban are set to begin after the prisoner exchange phase is completed, with discussions on Afghanistan’s political future.
