The declaration states that all offices, autonomous, semi-autonomous institutions, corporations and local councils under the administrative control of the Government of Sindh will remain closed on May 1, 2023 (Monday) on the occasion of Labor Day.
The International Labor Organization says the occasion is celebrated as the International Day for Workplace Safety and Health to pay tribute to the services and sacrifices made by workers around the world and to protect their legal rights.
The day honors the May 30, 1937, massacre of workers in Chicago, in which 10 unarmed protesters were shot dead by the Chicago Police Department. This incident took place in America during the Little Steel strike.
In 1972, Pakistan passed its first labor law, designating May 1 as a national holiday.
