Imran Khan, the leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), was detained by Rangers men on Tuesday in connection with the Al-Qadir Trust corruption case, which dates back to 2019. Khan is suspected of exploiting his position as prime minister in 2019 to provide legal protection for the illicit funds of a real estate mogul.
The former prime minister was detained on the grounds of the Islamabad High Court (IHC), where he had gone to request bail in a number of accusations brought against him, ranging from terrorism to money laundering.
Rana Sanaullah, the interior minister, stated during a news conference that Khan was detained in the Al-Qadir Trust corruption case for embezzling Rs 60 billion.
What is Al Qadir Trust case?
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) is investigating the former prime minister, his wife Bushra Bibi, and other PTI leaders in relation to a deal the PTI administration made with a real estate mogul that reportedly cost the national exchequer 190 million pounds.
According to the accusations, Khan and the other defendants allegedly changed Rs50 billion (190 million pounds at the time), which was transferred by the British National Crime Agency (NCA) to the Pakistani government as a condition of the deal with the real estate magnate.
Additionally, they are charged with receiving illegal benefits in the form of more than 458 kanals of land in Mouza Bakrala, Sohawa, for the construction of Al Qadir University.
A property tycoon in Britain had assets worth 190 million pounds confiscated by the National Crime Agency (NCA) of the United Kingdom under the PTI administration.
The settlement with the Pakistani property tycoon was described as “a civil matter, and does not represent a finding of guilt” by the agency, which also stated that the assets will be transferred to the government of Pakistan.
On December 3, 2019, the former prime minister Khan received consent for the settlement with the UK criminal agency from his cabinet without revealing the specifics of the private deal.
On behalf of the tycoon, it was determined that the money would be filed to the Supreme Court.
Afterward, a few weeks after the Imran-led government authorised the deal with the property billionaire, Al-Qadir Trust was set up in Islamabad.
Zulfi Bukhari, Babar Awan, Bushra Bibi, and her close friend Farah Khan, all PTI officials, were chosen as trustees.
The real estate magnate gave Bukhari, the PTI leader’s close assistant, 458 canals of land two to three months after the government gave its assent. Bukhari eventually gave the land to the trust.
Later, the trustees Bukhari and Awan chose to resign. Khan, Bushra Bibi, and Farah are the names on the trust’s current registration.
Earlier, NAB officers were looking into allegations of power abuse during the process of recovering “black money” from the UK criminal agency.
