What is the PCMD internship?

PCMD was established in 2004 and trains young scientists in genomics, proteomics, stem cells, virology and drug research. The ad says the internship gives medical and dental students “an opportunity to be involved in research activities at the molecular and cellular levels”, so that they pick up basic skills in clinically relevant research: forming research questions, choosing methods, and interpreting results critically. It is not a hospital house job and not a clinical posting. It is a short, hands-on look at laboratory research.

The ad also says ICCBS is a WHO collaborating centre and UNESCO-affiliated institute and has won the Islamic Development Bank Prize (2004 and 2010). Six of its centres are declared Sindh Government Healthcare Research Centers. Interns may be placed across these units, as in earlier years:

  • Dr. Panjwani Center for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research (PCMD)
  • Pharmaceutical Testing Laboratories
  • Jamil-ur-Rahman Center for Genomics Research
  • National Institute of Virology
  • Sino-Pakistan Traditional Medicine Research Center
  • Center for Bioequivalence Studies and Clinical Research

Nine research areas on offer

The 2026 ad lists these areas. Choose the one that fits your interest and name it in your email:

AI in Health Sciences Bioequivalence Studies Genomics Immunology and Microbiology Molecular and Structural Biology Pharmacology Proteomics Stem Cell Research Virology

New in 2026: “AI in Health Sciences” is on the list this year. The 2025 notice reported by APP named 11 areas (bioinformatics, immunology, microbiology, molecular biology and others as separate items) and did not list AI. The 2026 ad merges some areas, so check the wording before you write your email.

Who can apply?

  • Final-year MBBS or BDS students. This is the 2026 ad’s wording.
  • The ad’s first paragraph also speaks of “recent medical and dental graduates”. Earlier APP coverage (2025) likewise said recent graduates and MBBS/BDS students could apply. If you have just graduated, email the programme and ask instead of assuming.
  • Students of recognised medical and dental colleges have attended before. The 2024 batch came from seven institutions including Dow University of Health Sciences, Jinnah Sindh Medical University, Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences, Isra University Hyderabad, Fatima Jinnah Dental College and Karachi Medical and Dental College.
  • No age limit, CGPA or fee is mentioned in the ad.

What previous batches did

This programme has run every December. Public reports show what to expect:

  • 2023 batch: 20 final-year MBBS/BDS students and graduates; certificates were given by ICCBS Director Prof. Dr. Farzana Shaheen (BOL News).
  • 2024 batch: 13 participants who received internship certificates at a ceremony at ICCBS; the programme was organised by Prof. Dr. Asmat Salim and team (Dental Tribune Pakistan).
  • 2025 batch: 1–31 December 2025, apply by 2 November 2025, no stipend (APP).
  • Group sizes are small (13 in 2024), so selection is competitive.

It is unpaid: is it worth it?

Honest answer: only if you want research exposure. There is no stipend, accommodation, food or travel support mentioned. If you live outside Karachi, budget for a month of rent and travel.

  • Good for: students thinking about MPhil/PhD, a research career or a molecular-medicine CV. Time in a lab with a certificate is a real plus on a residency or scholarship application.
  • Not for: anyone who needs income or hopes for a job offer. The ad promises neither. A certificate is customary (past batches got one) but the 2026 ad does not state it.
  • Check your own college rules: some colleges count December as holidays, some do not. Ask your principal or HoD before applying.

What we could not confirm

The official ICCBS website did not load on our network when we checked on 29 October 2026, so the details above come from the printed advertisement and from earlier public reports. Not confirmed: (1) whether recent graduates may apply in 2026 as the ad’s first paragraph suggests, (2) the selection method and result date, (3) whether a certificate will be given, (4) exact seat count, (5) the placement location for each area. Please write to the email above with questions before the deadline.

Karna / Nahi karna

Karna ✅

  • Apply early, a week before 10 November if you can.
  • Get the HoD letter first: it is the slowest item.
  • Mention a specific area and one line on why.
  • Attach PDFs under a few MB each, with clear names (e.g. Name_Marksheet.pdf).
  • Keep a copy of the sent email.

Nahi karna ❌

  • Do not send money to anyone for a “seat”. The ad asks for no fee.
  • Do not trust WhatsApp numbers or agents claiming to “guarantee” selection. Use only the email in the original ad.
  • Do not send original documents. Send scans only.
  • Do not expect a salary or a job offer.
  • Do not apply with someone else’s HoD letter or an incomplete set of documents.
