CGPA calculator for your university's grading scale

Quick answer: First tell the tool at how many marks your university gives a 4.0 (or 5.0) GPA, then add your own subjects with marks and credit hours. It computes each subject's grade points, the semester GPA, the credit-weighted CGPA, the percentage equivalent and the GPA you need next semester to reach a target.

Step 1: set your university's grading scale

Tell the calculator how your university grades. You can change this any time.

Scale

Quick presets (common Pakistani patterns, check your prospectus):

Edit the marks → GPA bands (advanced)

Each row: marks from this value and above earn these grade points. Rows are read from the top. Below the last row is a fail (0).

Step 2: add your subjects

Type a subject name, its marks (or grade points) and credit hours. Add as many semesters as you have.

Your result

Cumulative GPA (CGPA)

How this CGPA calculator works

  1. Set the scale. Choose 4.0 or 5.0 and type the marks at which your university gives the top grade. The tool builds a band table (A+, A, B+ …) from that, which you can edit to match your prospectus exactly.
  2. Add subjects per semester. Enter marks (the tool converts them with your bands) or grade points directly, plus credit hours.
  3. Read GPA and CGPA. Each semester shows its GPA; the top card shows the credit-weighted CGPA across all semesters, the percentage equivalent and the letter grade.
  4. Plan ahead. The target box tells you the GPA you need next semester to hit a CGPA, for scholarship or job cut-offs such as 3.0 or 3.5.

The formulas

Semester GPA = Σ (grade points × credit hours) ÷ Σ credit hours.
CGPA = the same sum over all semesters.
Required GPA for a target = (target × (earned credits + next credits) − current grade points) ÷ next credits.
Percentage = credit-weighted average of the marks you typed (Σ marks × credit hours ÷ Σ credit hours). A subject entered as a grade point counts at the lowest marks of that grade band, so type marks where you can.

Reference: university grading policies vary; HEC publishes the semester system guidelines that most universities adapt. Last checked: 1 November 2026. Your prospectus or transcript is the authority.

Worked example

A student at a university where 85% = 4.0 takes three subjects in semester 1: Programming 88 marks (3 credits), Calculus 72 marks (3 credits), English 91 marks (2 credits). With a typical band table, 88 → 4.0, 72 → 3.0, 91 → 4.0. Grade points: 4.0 × 3 + 3.0 × 3 + 4.0 × 2 = 29 over 8 credit hours = GPA 3.63. If semester 2 (8 credits) gives 3.25, CGPA = (29 + 26) ÷ 16 = 3.44. To finish at 3.50 after a 15-credit semester 3, the student needs (3.50 × 31 − 55) ÷ 15 = 3.57.

Why one national formula does not exist

Universities set their own grading tables under their statutes. Punjab University, NUST, COMSATS, UET and private universities all publish different marks-to-grade bands, and some use relative grading per course. That is why this calculator asks you to describe your scale instead of assuming one. When an employer or a foreign university asks for a percentage, attach the equivalence table from your own transcript.

Frequently asked questions

All answers, in full:

Why does the calculator ask at how many marks I get a 4.0 GPA?
Because Pakistani universities do not share one grading scale. At some universities 80 marks give a 4.0 GPA, at others 85 or 90. The marks-to-GPA bands in your prospectus decide your grade, so this tool lets you type your own scale before it computes anything.
How is GPA calculated for a semester?
Each subject's grade points are multiplied by its credit hours, the products are added, and the total is divided by the total credit hours. Example: 3.7 × 3 + 3.0 × 3 + 4.0 × 2 = 28.1 grade points over 8 credit hours = 3.51 GPA.
How is CGPA different from GPA?
GPA is for one semester. CGPA (cumulative GPA) uses every subject from every semester together, weighted by credit hours. A semester with more credit hours moves the CGPA more.
How do I convert CGPA to percentage in Pakistan?
There is no single national formula. Many universities print an equivalence table in the transcript or prospectus, and HEC has issued an equivalence formula for its own purposes. The common rough rule is percentage ≈ CGPA × 25 on a 4.0 scale (CGPA × 20 on a 5.0 scale), but this tool lets you set your own bands so the conversion follows your university's table.
What CGPA do I need next semester to reach my target?
Use the "Reach a target CGPA" box. Enter your target and the credit hours of the next semester; the tool shows the semester GPA you need. If the answer is above your scale maximum, the target is not reachable in one semester.
Does the tool work for a 5.0 scale or for universities that use letter grades only?
Yes. Choose the 5.0 scale, or type grade points directly instead of marks for each subject. You can also edit the band table to match a letter-grade table (A+ = 4.0 at 90, A = 3.7 at 85, and so on).
Is my data saved?
Only in your own browser (local storage), so your subjects are still there when you come back on the same device. Nothing is sent to our servers.
