Almost every government job ad in Pakistan has an upper age limit, and almost every reader asks the same thing: “Am I too old, or does relaxation save me?” This guide (updated November 2026) explains the federal age relaxation rules in plain English, shows how your age is counted, and tells you where provinces and departments can differ. The short answer: 5 years general relaxation, 10 years for persons with disabilities (BPS-1 to 15), but the advertisement always wins.
In this guide
The federal rules in one table
| Category | Relaxation in upper age limit | Applies to | Basis |
| General (all eligible candidates) | 5 years | Initial appointment to civil posts in federal government departments | Establishment Division O.M. No. 9/2/91-R-5 dated 28-11-2000 |
| Persons with disabilities | 10 years | Posts in BPS-1 to BPS-15 | Establishment Division memorandum dated 24-06-2010 (clarification) |
| Framework rules | Upper age limit may be relaxed as notified | Initial appointment to civil posts | Initial Appointment to Civil Posts (Relaxation of Upper Age Limit) Rules, 1993 |
Example of how it adds up: if the ad says maximum age 28 years, the 5-year general relaxation takes it to 33 years. For a disabled candidate applying to a BPS-12 post, 28 + 10 = 38 years. Do not add both together unless the ad or the rule clearly says so; most departments apply the higher relaxation that fits you, not the sum.
Where the rules come from
Federal departments follow the Establishment Division. The 5-year general relaxation is quoted in federal ads as “Establishment Division O.M. No. 9/2/91-R-5 dated 28-11-2000”, and the 10-year relaxation for persons with disabilities as clarified on 24-06-2010. The legal framework is the 1993 upper age limit relaxation rules named in the table. You can see this wording in federal advertisements, for example in the FBR job instructions (PDF), which lists persons with disabilities for posts in BPS-15 and below with a 10-year relaxation.
Honest gap: we could not find one single, current, consolidated federal notice that replaces all older memos, and some older documents describe the general relaxation differently for different grades. That is why we only quote the figures that federal ads themselves repeat, and why you must read your own ad before you rely on any number.
How your age is counted
- Age is counted on the last date of the advertisement (closing date for applications), not on the date you apply and not on the date of the test.
- Count from the date of birth on your matriculation certificate, not from other documents if they differ.
- Most ads say “not more than X years”. Some departments treat 30 years 11 months as still within a 30-year limit; others do not. Where the ad does not say, the strict reading (you must not have crossed the limit on the closing date) is the safe one.
- Relaxation is added to the limit, so the same counting rule applies after adding it.
Worked examples
| Case | Date of birth | Closing date | Age on closing date | Ad limit + relaxation | Result |
| A. General candidate | 15 Mar 1996 | 20 Nov 2026 | 30 years 8 months | 28 + 5 = 33 | Eligible |
| B. Close to the limit | 10 Dec 1993 | 20 Nov 2026 | 32 years 11 months | 28 + 5 = 33 | Eligible (turns 33 only after the closing date) |
| C. Just over | 1 Oct 1993 | 20 Nov 2026 | 33 years 1 month | 28 + 5 = 33 | Not eligible under the strict reading |
| D. Disabled candidate, BPS-12 | 5 Jun 1990 | 20 Nov 2026 | 36 years 5 months | 25 + 10 = 35 | Not eligible |
| E. Disabled candidate, BPS-12 | 5 Jun 1992 | 20 Nov 2026 | 34 years 5 months | 25 + 10 = 35 | Eligible |
Case C shows why the closing date matters: a few weeks in the calendar change the answer. Instead of counting months on your fingers, put your date of birth and the last date into the Educativz age calculator. It has a strict mode and a completed-years mode, so you can see both readings.
Provinces, CSS and special posts
- Provincial governments (Punjab, Sindh, KP, Balochistan) set their own relaxation through their own service rules and cabinet decisions. News reports in recent years describe larger relaxations in some provinces, while Balochistan has said it grants nothing beyond its notification. These change, so read the province’s ad or Public Service Commission notice.
- CSS / FPSC has its own age rules for the Competitive Examination, including a separate relaxation for persons with disabilities. Do not use the general 5-year figure for CSS.
- Autonomous bodies, banks, armed forces and police usually follow their own recruitment rules. A Pak Army or Police ad lists its own age range.
- Contract and private posts may have no relaxation at all.
If you apply on the National Job Portal, see our step-by-step NJP online apply guide. For PPSC posts, check the latest ads in our PPSC jobs hub.
Common mistakes
- Counting age on today’s date instead of the closing date.
- Adding 5 years to every ad without checking if the ad already mentions relaxation.
- Using the general 5-year rule for provincial or CSS posts.
- Expecting the 10-year disability relaxation on a BPS-16+ post, when the memorandum ties it to BPS-1 to 15.
- Forgetting the disability certificate or other document the relaxation needs.
Karna / Nahi karna
Karna: read the ad’s age line first; calculate on the closing date; keep your matric certificate and (if you claim relaxation) the disability certificate ready; apply early.
Nahi karna: do not pay any agent for “age relaxation”; do not edit your date of birth; do not trust a group message over the official ad.
FAQs
How many years of age relaxation are given in federal government jobs in Pakistan (November 2026)?
Federal ads quote 5 years general relaxation (Establishment Division O.M. 28-11-2000) and 10 years for persons with disabilities in BPS-1 to 15 (clarification of 24-06-2010). Always follow your own advertisement.
Is age counted on the closing date?
Yes. Government ads count your age on the last date for receiving applications.
Do provinces give the same 5 years?
Not necessarily. Provinces and departments follow their own rules. Check the provincial ad or commission notice.
Can I add 5 and 10 years together?
Usually no. Departments apply the relaxation that fits your category; the ad or rules must clearly allow more.
Is there a free tool to check my age?
Yes, the Educativz Age Calculator for Govt Jobs works in your browser, saves nothing and applies 5-year or 10-year presets.
Check your age on the exact closing date in 10 seconds.
