“My CGPA is 3.4. What is my percentage?” Every year, students ask this before a job form, a scholarship or a foreign application, and every answer on the internet is different. This guide (updated November 2026) explains why, shows how a credit-weighted CGPA is really calculated, compares the rough CGPA × 25 rule with what universities do, and gives you a safe way to get a number that employers will accept.

GPA vs CGPA: how it is calculated

  • GPA is for one semester. Each course grade is turned into grade points (for example A = 4.0, A- = 3.67, B+ = 3.33, B = 3.0), multiplied by its credit hours, added up and divided by the total credit hours.
  • CGPA uses all semesters together: total grade points of all courses divided by total credit hours. It is not the simple average of semester GPAs unless every semester has the same credit hours.

Formula: CGPA = Σ (grade points × credit hours) ÷ Σ credit hours.

Worked example

Semester Course Credit hrs Grade Grade points Points × credits
1 Course 1 3 A 4.00 12.00
1 Course 2 3 B+ 3.30 9.90
1 Course 3 4 B 3.00 12.00
1 Course 4 2 A- 3.67 7.34
2 Course 5 3 B 3.00 9.00
2 Course 6 3 A 4.00 12.00
2 Course 7 3 C+ 2.30 6.90
2 Course 8 3 B+ 3.30 9.90

Semester 1: 41.24 ÷ 12 = GPA 3.44. Semester 2: 37.80 ÷ 12 = GPA 3.15. Overall: (41.24 + 37.80) ÷ 24 = 79.04 ÷ 24 = CGPA 3.29. You can check any such calculation with the Educativz CGPA calculator and it handles unlimited semesters.

The ×25 rule (and its limit)

On a 4.0 scale the common shortcut is percentage = CGPA × 25 (and on a 5.0 scale, CGPA × 20). Our example gives 3.29 × 25 = 82.3%. It is easy and handy for a rough idea. The problem is that it assumes a perfect straight line from 0 to 100, whereas a student with 3.29 in most universities has marks closer to the 70s because the top grade starts at 80 or 85, not 100.

Honest gap: several calculator sites say ×25 is “the HEC formula”. We could not find a single binding HEC table that every university must use. Treat ×25 as an estimate; use your own university’s policy for anything official.

Why every university differs

  • Each university decides its own grade bands: where an A starts (80, 85 or 90 marks), what counts as a D or a pass.
  • Some use 4.0, some 5.0, and some institutes have their own letter systems.
  • Course-level marks are converted to letters, so the same GPA can come from different average marks.
  • Older degrees may use annual-system divisions (First, Second, Third) instead of GPA.

Same CGPA, three universities: 4.0 at 80, 85 or 90 marks

To show the effect, we scale our CGPA 3.29 to different “top-grade” thresholds. This is a simple proportional illustration, not any university’s official table:

University gives 4.0 at Rough percentage for 3.29 (3.29 ÷ 4 × threshold) Compare with ×25 rule
80 marks about 65.8% 82.3%
85 marks about 69.9% 82.3%
90 marks about 74.0% 82.3%
100 marks (straight ×25) 82.3% 82.3%

The gap between 66% and 82% for the same CGPA is why a one-size-fits-all conversion is risky. In the Educativz calculator you pick your own 4.0 threshold and edit the grade bands, so the percentage matches your university’s style. Applying for admission? Use the aggregate calculator and the merit calculator with the official formula of the institute.

What to submit officially

  • Ask the university (exam section or controller) for an official CGPA-to-percentage equivalence letter. Most universities issue one for a small fee.
  • For HEC degree attestation or equivalence, send the transcript and degree as required; HEC and other bodies rely on your university’s own documents.
  • For job and scholarship forms, enter your CGPA when the form asks for CGPA, and a percentage only if the form insists; attach the equivalence letter.
  • See our admissions hub for how merit is calculated by each institute, for example the NUTECH admission guide.

Karna / Nahi karna

Karna: keep your final transcript, calculate CGPA with credit hours, ask the university for an equivalence letter, and use the same number everywhere.

Nahi karna: do not invent a percentage or round up; do not pay anyone for a “converted” certificate; do not submit a calculator screenshot as proof.

FAQs

How do I convert CGPA to percentage in Pakistan (November 2026)?

The rough rule is CGPA × 25 on a 4.0 scale, but universities use their own grade bands, so ask your university for an official equivalence letter for any application.

Is there an official HEC formula?

We could not find one binding table that all universities must follow. Many sites quote ×25, but the university’s own policy is what counts.

Is CGPA the average of my semester GPAs?

Not usually. CGPA is weighted by credit hours, so semesters with more credit hours count more.

What is 3.5 CGPA in percentage?

With ×25 it is 87.5%, but with a university that gives 4.0 at 85 marks it is closer to 74%. Check your own policy.

What if my university uses a 5.0 scale?

Use the 5.0-scale multiplier (about ×20) as an estimate only, and ask the university for the real conversion.

Is there a free CGPA calculator?

Yes, the Educativz CGPA Calculator works in your browser, lets you set your own scale and keeps data on your device.

Calculate your CGPA and percentage with your own university scale.
