Very urgent: the supervisor’s preferred application date for this PhD place is 31 October 2026, only 2 days from now. It is a preference, not a hard wall (he says he accepts outstanding students at any time, with higher expectations). If you are eligible, send the form and your documents today or tomorrow. The university scholarship deadline is separate: 18 December 2026.

Quick answer: The University of Sydney (Australia) funds international PhD students through the Australian Government RTP stipend / University of Sydney International Stipend Scholarship (USYDIS): AUD 44,293 a year (2027 rate), plus a tuition fee scholarship covering 100% of fees for up to 14 research periods. Dr Jonathan K. Kummerfeld is recruiting PhD students in NLP / AI / Computer Science for 2027. International students, including Pakistanis, are considered. It is competitive: nothing is guaranteed.

What You Get: Stipend, Tuition and Allowances

BenefitOfficial detail
Stipend (living allowance)AUD 44,293 per year (2027 rate; the 2026 rate was AUD 42,754). The supervisor says it is not taxed because it is a scholarship.
TuitionRTP Fee Offset: 100% of tuition fees for up to 14 research periods. USYDIS recipients get the equivalent University of Sydney Tuition Fee Scholarship automatically.
Health coverOverseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is listed under the RTP Fee Offset. Check the terms for USYDIS before you rely on it.
Relocation + thesisBoth are listed on the official page. Amounts are not on that page; the USYDIS terms document gives them (we saw up to AUD 1,485 for travel to Sydney, up to AUD 1,485 for the return trip and up to AUD 840 thesis costs for doctoral students). Confirm in the terms PDF.
DurationUp to 14 full-time research periods for a doctorate (roughly 3.5 to 4 years)

Official RTP table: “$44,293 p.a. stipend (2027 rate)” and “Relocation and thesis allowance” (captured 29 October 2026).

Who gets it: awards are competitive. The university says preference may go to applicants who have not previously held an Australian Government or University scholarship at the same level and have not completed a research degree at the same level.

Why the Supervisor’s Page Says AUD 41,000 and the University Says AUD 44,293

Dr Kummerfeld’s page says the standard stipend is “about 41,000 AUD per year”. The university’s RTP page says AUD 44,293 for 2027. The supervisor’s figure looks like an older approximate number (it is lower than even the 2026 rate), but this is not confirmed. Our advice: plan with the official figure but budget conservatively, and ask the supervisor at the interview what your exact stipend will be.

Eligibility: Who Should Apply

  • Bachelor’s degree with substantial computer science study (the supervisor’s requirement).
  • Some research experience: a senior or honours thesis, a master’s with an independent research part, serious industry research (for example a research-lab internship), or a pre-doctoral position.
  • A master’s degree and published papers are not required by this group. They help, and so do internships and personal projects.
  • The university’s own research-degree criteria usually mean first-class honours, a research master’s or an equivalent. How a Pakistani degree fits is judged case by case (see the Pakistan section).
  • Part-time students are accepted only in rare cases; you are expected to live in Sydney.
  • Not for you if you are already a PhD student elsewhere looking for a 6–12 month visit: the supervisor says he does not respond to those.

English Language Requirement

The university’s standard for postgraduate study is IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, but the page says some faculties and courses ask for more. Other accepted tests: TOEFL iBT (the TOEFL Australia version only, not Home Edition), PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency. Results must be no more than two years old at your course start. IELTS Online is not accepted.

Honest note: the supervisor’s page does not mention English at all, and an older research-degree policy document we saw mentions 7.0 overall with 6.5 in each band. We could not confirm which level applies to the Computer Science PhD, so aim for IELTS 7.0 if you have time, and ask the supervisor or admissions team what your course needs. Exemptions exist (for example a recent degree taught entirely in English): see the official page.

Documents You Need

  • Statement of Purpose: PDF, 2–4 pages, covering your academic background, research interests and why you want a PhD.
  • Transcripts (PDF or images)
  • CV / resume (PDF)
  • Reference letters: your referees email them directly to the supervisor (not to central admissions), from a professional or university email address, subject “PhD Recommendation for [Your Name]”. The page does not say how many.
  • IELTS or another English result (needed for the formal application)
  • Passport and degree certificates (for the formal application and visa)

How to Apply: Step by Step

1
Read the supervisor’s page
Open jkk.name/students/recruiting-phd and check that your interests match NLP / AI.
2
Fill the Google Form on that page
He replies to emails only if you completed the web form, and he answers to the email address you enter there, so use one you check daily. (We did not fill or submit the form.)
3
Email your documents
Send to jonathan.kummerfeld@sydney.edu.au, subject “PhD application: your name”, with the Statement of Purpose, transcripts and CV.
4
Ask your referees to write
They email the supervisor directly with the subject “PhD Recommendation for [Your Name]”.
5
Interview (November)
If shortlisted you get a phone interview. If a grant can fund you, he says so; otherwise the university fellowship (RTP / USYDIS) is the route.
6
Formal university application and scholarship form
With his help you complete the university application, which includes the scholarship application. The RTP form deadline for research periods 3 and 4 is 18 December 2026. Then you receive a formal offer.
7
Offer, visa, travel
After the offer you apply for an Australian student visa and arrange health cover and housing in Sydney. Check the Department of Home Affairs for current visa rules.

For Pakistani Applicants: What to Check

  • Your degree: the supervisor wants a bachelor’s with substantial CS study plus research experience. A 16-year BS (CS/SE) with a final-year thesis or research work is a realistic profile; an MS/MPhil with research strengthens it. Whether Sydney rates your degree as equal to first-class honours is decided case by case, so state your CGPA, thesis and any papers clearly.
  • HEC: keep your degrees attested and HEC equivalence ready if you studied abroad or if the visa process asks. HEC’s own PhD scholarship rules ask for an 18-year education, but that applies to HEC scholarships, not to this Sydney route (not confirmed for Sydney).
  • Visa and health cover: after an offer you need an Australian student visa. OSHC is part of the RTP fee offset; confirm it for USYDIS.
  • Reference letters: ask your professors now, because they must email the supervisor themselves from official addresses.
  • No application fee to agents. The supervisor’s page asks for no payment. Anyone asking for Rs against a “guaranteed seat” is a scam.
  • Competition: this place is competitive. With no thesis, no research experience or no reference letters it is unlikely, so also look at other funded PhD options.

What Is Not Confirmed

  • Whether the supervisor’s AUD 41,000 or the official AUD 44,293 applies to your actual award.
  • The exact IELTS level for the Computer Science PhD (6.5 / 6.0 standard, or possibly 7.0 / 6.5).
  • Whether OSHC is included for USYDIS the same way as for the RTP Fee Offset.
  • Number of places, selection weights and whether the formal university application has a fee (not stated on the pages we read).
  • How a Pakistani 16-year degree is rated against “first-class honours” in the formal assessment.

Karna / Nahi Karna

Karna:

  • Fill the form and email your documents before 31 October if you are eligible; do not wait for 18 December.
  • Write a specific Statement of Purpose naming his research area and your own related work.
  • Prepare IELTS in parallel; do not wait for the offer.
  • Use only official contacts: jonathan.kummerfeld@sydney.edu.au and sydney.edu.au pages.
  • Apply to 3–5 supervisors or universities; one place is very competitive.

Nahi karna:

  • Do not pay any agent or “consultant” for this place; there is no fee on the supervisor’s page.
  • Do not send reference letters to central admissions: they must go to the supervisor.
  • Do not mix up 31 October (supervisor) with 18 December (scholarship form).
  • Do not copy a generic Statement of Purpose; he replies only to completed forms.
  • Do not trust social-media posts alone; they differ on stipend and dates.
