Quick answer: The Punjab government plans a new curriculum for Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) to Grade 5 from the new academic session starting April 2027. Reports say textbooks will be about 25% lighter, each book will carry QR codes that open video lessons, and teaching will move from rote learning to concept-based and digital learning. PECTAA is reported to be finalising the content (December 2026) with printing to follow (January 2027). Nothing here is a final notification yet: see what is not announced below.

Honest note: as of 4 November 2026 we could not find an official notification, press release or textbook list for this plan on the School Education Department or PECTAA pages we could open. Everything below marked “reported” comes from news reports of the education reforms meeting, not from a government document. We will update this page when an official notice appears.

What Is Planned: The Main Points

  • Complete replacement of the existing curriculum for Classes I to V from the new session (reported); ECCE is included in the revised set.
  • 25% lighter textbooks, fewer books per class and simpler content so children carry and study less.
  • QR codes in textbooks: a child or parent scans the code with a phone and watches a video lesson on that topic.
  • Concept-based learning: the aim is understanding and learning outcomes, not memorising.
  • More IT and computer education in primary classes; a separate AI curriculum for Grades 1 to 12 was also ordered (its start date differs between reports, so we do not treat it as confirmed).
  • One day a week for teacher training, with the authors of the new books helping teach the teachers (reported).

What Changes for Parents, Teachers and Private Schools

Group What to expect (reported / likely) What is not clear yet
Parents New books from April 2027; lighter bags; scan QR codes for video help at home Book prices, free distribution, how to get the books before the session starts
Government school students New textbooks for ECCE to Grade 5; the same class will have fewer books Whether Punjab’s free-textbook scheme covers all new books on day one
Teachers A weekly training day; book authors will help train; shift to concept teaching Training schedule, who trains whom, and the assessment pattern
Private schools The concern raised is heavy bags, extra “supplementary” books and homework; real relief needs schools to limit these too Whether private schools must adopt the new books or any bag-weight rule is not announced
Publishers Publishers objected to curriculum changes in late 2025 over expected losses; the government went ahead Whether private publishers may print the new books is not announced

QR Codes and Video Lessons: How It Should Work

Each revised textbook is reported to carry QR codes. A student scans the code with a phone camera and a video lesson on that topic opens. The School Education Department already runs eLearn Punjab, which it describes on its website as the official repository of digitized textbooks of Punjab, so digital copies are not a new idea there. We do not know yet where the new videos will be hosted.

  • Internet is needed to stream videos. Children without a smartphone or data pack may need school help: ask the school how it will manage this.
  • Scan only the codes printed inside the official textbook. A QR code on a message, sticker or social-media post can lead anywhere.
  • Do not install any app or enter your phone number, CNIC or card details because a “curriculum video” page asks for it.
  • Watch the video together with your child and then let the child explain it back: that is the concept-based method the plan talks about.

Heavy School Bags: What Will Really Help

Educationists quoted in the reports say a 25% lighter textbook set helps only if schools stop adding extra books and heavy homework. The government plan covers the official textbooks; what a private school adds on top is a separate matter, and no bag-weight limit has been announced.

Cause of a heavy bag Does the new plan fix it?
Too many textbooks Yes, partly: fewer, 25% lighter books (reported)
Extra “supplementary” books bought from the school Not by itself: needs school rules
Daily notebooks for every subject Not announced
Heavy homework Not announced
Water bottle, lunch box, stationery No: use a light bag and carry only the day’s timetable

Simple parent test: weigh the packed bag. A common health guideline is that a child should not carry more than about 10% of their body weight. This is general health advice, not a Punjab government rule.

What Is Not Announced

  • Official notification or press release with the full curriculum and class-wise subject list.
  • Exact textbook count per class and the exact meaning of “25%” (pages, books or content).
  • Final content, printing and delivery dates: the two reported printing dates differ.
  • Free textbooks for the new session and how they will be distributed.
  • Rules for private schools on books, bag weight and homework.
  • Where QR videos are hosted and whether they work offline.
  • Cambridge: no official statement found on the comparison or on any approval.
  • Medium of instruction: not part of this plan as reported; the School Education Department’s separate English-medium notification is a different matter.

What We Could Verify (and What We Could Not)

We checked the official School Education Department website on 4 November 2026: it lists eLearn Punjab (digitized textbooks), Parho Punjab Barho Punjab and the Foundational Literacy and Numeracy app, but we found no notice about the new primary curriculum. The PECTAA website showed a bot-verification screen to our tools, so we could not read it. The facts in this article about the plan come from news reports of the 24 September 2026 reforms meeting and a report of 4 November 2026; we have not copied their text. Karna / Nahi Karna

Karna:

  • Keep the current books and notebooks until the new session; old books are still needed for the present term.
  • Wait for the official notification and the school’s book list before buying anything for April 2027.
  • Ask the school how many books, notebooks and homework it will allow, and if it will follow the 25% reduction.
  • Start a light daily reading habit at home: concept-based learning rewards children who can explain what they read.
  • Teachers: prepare for a weekly training day and look at your class’s weak concepts now.
  • Follow the official School Education Department and PECTAA pages, and our news updates for changes.

Nahi karna:

  • Do not pay anyone for “new curriculum books”, “PDF bundles” or “early copies”: no sale has been announced.
  • Do not scan unknown QR codes or download apps claiming to hold the new videos.
  • Do not share unverified dates (for example “books free from 1 January”) as facts.
  • Do not overload the bag with extra guides because the textbooks are lighter.
  • Do not panic: the plan covers ECCE to Grade 5 only and starts in April 2027.
